Was it the intriguing name of Erotic Secrets of Pompeii that caught my attention or the title of their latest single, “Osiris at the Large Hadron Collider”, that further piqued my curiosity? No matter which, the super nerd in me can say that one thing that is undeniable is that Erotic Secrets of Pompeii delivers a hella catchy, fun, and infectious track.
Hailing from Bristol, the art-rock ensemble of Thomas Hawtin (vocals), Tom Hackwell (guitar/synth), Sean Jones (guitar), Julian Port (bass), and Jake Cheesman (drums) are gearing up for their January 25th release of their debut album Mondo Maleficum.
In “Osiris at the Large Hadron Collider”, Erotic Secrets of Pompeii skillfully intertwines elements of post-punk and art that reminds me of the eclectic sounds of Talking Heads and They Might Be Giants. It’s whip-smart and amusing, with a mischievous charm.
While the song might portray the Egyptian god confronting the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, its deeper message delves into humanity’s fixation with mortality, faith, and power.
On the song, frontman Thomas said,
“It’s a regretful realisation set to frenetic, staccato guitars and a pounding rhythm section which drive the song in a maniacal, mechanical motion, while the choruses ring out with vocal harmonies chanting with cult-like conviction.”
With it’s brainy depth and playfulness, “Osiris at the Large Hadron Collider” is a glorious sneak peek into what Erotic Secrets of Pompeii has created with Mondo Maleficum, and it currently shows off the band’s talent to blend deep ideas into catchy beats while also showing off their cool and unique artistic vibe.
