In her latest single, “Dyarrubin,” Charlie Needs Braces invites one to celebrate the natural world. “Dyarrubin” weaves a tapestry of sound that is as rich and vivid as the landscape it honours. Named after the traditional title for the Hawkesbury River in Australia, “Dyarrubin” is a heartfelt homage to the beauty and vitality that is Australia.
Charlie, a proud GuriNgai woman and direct descendant of Bungaree and Matora, and her sister Miri, with their lush vocal harmonies that soar over delicate brass loops and solos, bring the life of the Dyarrubin to life through sound. But for me, it’s the rhythm of “Dyarrubin” that seals the deal. It feels as if the rhythm was called up from the elders that Charlie descends from. It’s a feeling of wisdom, hope, and education.
Inspired by the setting sun on said river, Charlie says,
“We need to continue to protect and take care of our Country, maintaining the lands and waters just as our ancestors have done for so long before us. Celebrate our Country and Culture with us.”
While Charlie speaks to the importance of Country and Culture in Australia, the song is also a great reminder that Country and Culture of the land where one lives can and should be honoured. In celebrating and calling for the preservation of Australia’s natural beauty, “Dyarrubin” is an enchanting musical tribute to nature and Country.
