LISTEN: “Televangelist” by Mutes

It’s time to find religion or perhaps lose the one you’ve been faithfully standing by because your parents did and their parents and so on and so on. While I am not knocking anyone’s choice of faith, I will always poke the bear of religion when it comes to being anything but kind.

For me, in the words of a Ville Valo, “music is my god, my religion” and with their latest single, “Televangelist”, Mutes also adds fire to further the flames of my personal beliefs.

From their May 17th fourth studio album …buried where you stand, Mutes have released a fast and furious exploration of existential calamity.

On the song, the band says,

“Theological projections of an irresolute agnostic; torn between clinging to the assuaging hand of statism and laying waste to internalised idolatry. Catholic guilt is one hell of a trip.”

Through the solid foundation of imposing drumming, roaring guitars, rumbling bass, and vocals “Televangelist” is brimming not with hellfire or damnation, but with honesty, attitude, and a fierceness that only punk rock can bring.
