ALBUM REVIEW: Am I Invisible by BornBroken

BornBroken’s new album, Am I Invisible, is a powerful statement in the domain of metal. With a fresh lineup and a renewed sense of purpose, the band dives headfirst into the complexities of the human condition and wraps profound themes in a barrage of aggressive thrash and death metal sounds.

From the outset, the album’s title track captures the essence of their journey. The band has articulated their desire to create something “raw and real,” and this authenticity permeates every note. “Am I Invisible” invites one to grapple with feelings of isolation and the existential dread that comes with feeling unnoticed. Its haunting chorus asks a question that many can relate to in today’s fast-paced world.

The album tackles weighty themes like societal division and personal struggle and each track offering a unique lens on the human experience. “Time Pays No Respect” addresses the relentless passage of time and presents a stark reminder of its impact on our lives. The lyrics illustrate how time devours everything and creates an emotional weight that will echo with many.

With the album BornBroken pushes the envelope by experimenting with their metal roots. The balance between heavy and aggressive riffs and melodic elements create a dynamic experience that keeps one engaged from start to finish. “How Strong You Are” is an empowering anthem about resilience and self-belief and urges one to take charge of their destinies amidst life’s challenges. The track showcases the band’s ability to fuse personal narratives with electrifying musicianship.

Even the artwork contributes to the overall look and feel of the album. Featuring a large and unsettling red eye at its centre, it symbolises perception and perhaps the feeling of being watched or overlooked. The visual impact aligns with the album’s themes and sets a tone of intensity and reflection right from the start.

Another compelling track, “Age of Anger,” is a critique of societal division and intolerance and calls for unity and empathy. This social commentary adds a layer of relevance that makes the album feel timely and important. I like that the band doesn’t shy away from addressing uncomfortable truths and their courage is commendable in a ‘cancel culture landscape’ where expressing one’s thoughts could lead to an unexpected and quick downfall.

Am I Invisible is a narrative that invites one to reflect on their own experiences. Each track, from the overwhelming stress of “7 Mondays” to the introspective nature of “Will You Remember,” is a chapter in a broader story about the highs and lows of life. BornBroken’s dedication to their craft is evident. They’ve poured their hearts into this album and it shows in the intensity of their performances and the authenticity of their lyrics. It’s an exceptional and bold exploration of the struggles we all face and is music that speaks to the heart of the human experience while delivering relentless metal energy.
