ALBUM REVIEW: Blackfin by Into the Deep

From the murky depths of North Carolina, Into the Deep are unhooking their latest release, Blackfin, on January 3rd.

While I’d love to say that my use of maritime language has ended, I would be lying as the trio of Michael Hambright (lead vocals, guitar, bass), Eric Hambright (lead guitar, vocals), and Phil Cicco (drums, vocals) are mired deep with oceanic imagery.

However, Into the Deep‘s incorporation of seafaring terminology extends beyond mere schtick. Their dive metal carries a meaningful message rooted in ocean ecology, conservation, oceanic life, waves, and nautical vessels.

The title track navigates the incessant grip of social media on human life, while “Spaceshark” takes a deep dive into a shark’s reign over a sulfuric lake-covered planet, spawned from NASA’s space experiments.

Continuing the saga, “Hammerhead” sheds light on ocean exploitation and condemns the dire impact of the shark fin trade on marine ecosystems.

Both songs unleash a fierce current of formidable riffs, thundering bass, crashing drums, and commanding vocals that channel the potent and contemplative concepts that reverberate within the lyrics.

Plunge Into the Deep with Blackfin and explore the abyss of the ocean through rumbling vocals, soul-crushing riffs, and powerful messages about humanity’s need to change.
