ALBUM REVIEW: Fight As One by Freya

Fight As One from Freya is lightning quick. Clocking in at just shy of 28 minutes, the 11 songs are fast and furious.

Since day one, Freya have not stopped crushing the ears and souls of fans and as they approach their 20th anniversary of their first release, As the Last Light Drains (2003), they only continue the punishing assault fans have come to know and love.

On the album Fight As One, vocalist Karl Buechner says,

Everyone in the band unified and composed some outstanding material together. Tom and Ethan poured everything they had into making Fight As One a truly powerful offering.”

Joining Freya on the album are Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed on the track “Sense of Doom”, Freddy Cricien of Madball on the title track “Fight As One”, and Scott Vogel of Terror on “Thousand Yard Stare”. Each hardcore frontman easily blends into the folds of Freya with ease, showcasing the universal sound that the New York band has mastered.

For the title track the band expresses,

From our perspective things are undeniably and unusually chaotic in recent times. ‘Fight as One’ is an acknowledgment of that reality. Lyrically the song is about how hard times strengthen the true friendships. Freddy Madball put the jewel in the crown on this track for us with a block of hard-hitting lyrics and one of the most powerful voices in all of hardcore.

And the band says this about the song “Sense of Doom”,

We are all living through increasingly tumultuous and uncertain times. ‘Sense of Doom’ is about weathering those storms by staying unified with friends and family. The message is about never surrendering to negativity and holding true to core values.

Fight As One is fierce with inspiring hostility, moving anger, and breakneck fast. Tune out and you’ll miss the wonder of the album.
