ALBUM REVIEW: Noctomb by Noctomb

Hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina, the three-piece ensemble known as Noctomb is poised to crush boundaries with their genre-defying approach to songwriting. With influences that span the musical spectrum, they skillfully merge the intensity of black metal with a diverse range of elements, creating a sonic experience that effortlessly oscillates between hostility and soul-searching.

The trio of left-handed cynics picked up right-handed instruments and the rest is history. Releasing their debut record, Obulus for Charon (2014), Noctomb has continuously forged onward as outsiders but has never given up their identity as a band that likes to redline sound.

That desire to push their sound to the edges can be heard in the endless onslaught of fuzz-driven riffs, thundering percussion, and visceral vocals.

Tracks like “Cult of Hera” or “Kali Yuga” easily spot light the lofty sonic goals Noctomb has given themselves, but it’s stand out tracks “Zombie Fungus” and “Tongues of Madness” that makes me think they could indeed raise demons of the netherworld through song.

Each note played is precise, proficient, and on point, allowing for the speed of not only the guitars but the drums to assault the senses in rapid fire beats that crush and destroy one’s soul.

Not one for the meek, Noctomb by Noctomb is an ambitious, bold, and formidable journey through the sludge driven underworld of black metal.
