DEBUT ALBUM REVIEW: Nite Bjuti by Nite Bjuti

Welcome to the mesmerising world of Nite Bjuti, where bass, harmonies, vocal seduction, and soulful connection intertwine to create an enchanting debut album.

The name Nite Bjuti, pronounced as Night Beauty, draws inspiration from a Haitian folklore of the same name that speaks of a girl whose spirit seeks justice, causing her bones to sing in the afterlife.

This magical trio of fierce Black artists transcends earthly boundaries, captivating us mere mortals with their magnificent storytelling, heartfelt lyricism, and mesmerising beats. Composed of singer-songwriter Candice Hoyes, bassist Mimi Jones, and GRAMMY® Award-winning soundchemist Val Jeanty, Nite Bjuti weaves a powerful collection of songs that celebrate the journey of Black women throughout history.

Their self-titled debut album skillfully traverses themes of vodoun, sisterhood, sexual expression, reproductive freedom, magic, and the profound wisdom found in the letters of Zora Neale Hurston and the evocative Kitchen Table Series by Carrie Mae Weems. Across generations and timelines, Nite Bjuti unites us all in a tapestry of shared experiences.

What makes this album truly beautiful is the trio’s choice of improvisation, granting each of the 11 tracks a unique space and intimacy. Within this musical landscape, listeners are invited to embrace stillness or embark on an inward journey, feeling the music and lyrics ignite something deep within.

As a bass enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at Mimi Jones‘ virtuosity. Her bass lines exude a wonderful freedom, especially when she explores the pluckiness of her instrument, evident in tracks like “Sourop” and “Speech and Silence”.

In the realm of Nite Bjuti, their debut album becomes a transcendental experience, lighting up the souls of those who listen and offering a moment of spiritual connection or self-discovery. It empowers a sense of sacredness and inner peace, making it a captivating journey for all who encounter its ethereal allure.
