ALBUM REVIEW: Sound Weapon by Paraline

Expanding beyond being a project for brothers Leo “Light” Andersen (lead vocals, guitar) and Kirill Langley (lead guitar), Paraline is a brotherhood with Alex Shustoff on bass guitar and Kirill Pargin on drums. The band fearlessly explores life’s duality through haunting sonic melodies and sincere and earnest lyrics.

Recently signed to Eclipse Records, Sound Weapon (March 1) showcases the band’s drive, determination, and sheer power to not only provide well crafted and tightly woven songs, but to also move one’s soul. In the five tracks of Sound Weapon, Paraline’s talent knows no bounds.

Opening with the powerful and anthem-esque “Icarus”, the song sets the pace for the album. Heavy in rock and attitude, the track is a shining moment for the power of Kirlill Pargin’s drumming and the guitars. That heavy power continues into “One Shot, One Kill”.

But where the unified front of Paraline is the strongest is “Hyperdynamic”. It is the shining star of Sound Weapon. The song intricately shows off each member’s skills and does so through fluid and harmonious melodies that are infectious, catchy, and down right head banging.

The dichotomy of “1999” is poignant as it is impressive. Through the reverberating bass and drums, and haunting vocals, “1999” elicits not only a moment of spirituality that causes one to pause and reflect but is also gut wrenching and full of heartache.

With “Icarus” being the fire lighting anthem that starts Sound Weapon, then “Perfect Blue” is the reminder why one lights or keeps the fires burning. It is a moment of reprieve that allows the power of Sound Weapon to fully sink into one’s soul.

Sound Weapon by Paraline is not only a battle cry but a call to arms for the disillusioned and disenfranchised. Giving hope and being a beacon of light for those that are trying to find their way out of the dark.
