ALBUM REVIEW: The Garden by Andrew Smith

Simple. Nostalgic. Wistful. Sentimental. Heartfelt. Tender. Those are the words that come to mind when listening to Andrew Smith’s latest album, The Garden.

With The Garden, Andrew has wonderfully crafted lyrical stories that are interwoven with catchy beats and music and lyrics that resonate with real life emotions. Be it songs like “Emoji Heart (Stephen’s Song)” that explores the complexities of platonic love or “My Neighbour Mariana” that is an ode to a neighbour as seen through his observations.

Andrew’s vivid imagination paints colourful lyrical portrayals of life, his and others, of memories, of feelings, and more. While his lyrics create the foundation for each song, it’s Andrew’s sincere and earnest vocals that build the songs into the magical dreams they are. There’s a frankness to his vocals and at times feel delicate and fragile and others confident, strong, and defiant.

With an aim to provide comfort for those seeking their true selves and hope, Andrew not only provides both, but gifts the listener with a sort of companion guide with The Garden. It’s a guide that will comfort and inspire and perhaps let one realise they are not alone in their journey.

Andrew has cultivated a lovely collection of songs about self acceptance, fame, friends, love, and heartbreak with The Garden.
