DEBUT EP REVIEW: Inside Voices by Tig

Music Review
Shelia Taylor
February 1, 2024

After falling in love with Tig’s debut single, “Too Late Heartbreak”, she has now gifted the Universe and music lovers a stunning and sincere debut EP with Inside Voices.

The four track EP, is brimming with heart and soul that’s showcased through Tig’s heartfelt voice. The lyrics are intimate and poetic as if lifted from the private journal entries meant for no one but the author. The listener is witnessing first hand the emotions, heartache, and feelings of thoughts of a personal realisation and experience.

On the EP, Tig says,

“After a long time away from music, I encountered two things when I tried to start writing this EP – a loud inner critic and a lot of things I was afraid to say. I stumbled across the words ‘inside voices’ that I’d written on a piece of paper years earlier and I realised that’s what the EP was about. Challenging the notion of using an ‘inside voice’ so as not to disrupt, while also questioning my own internal voice that wanted me to play it safe.”

Working with Jono Steer (co-producer, mixing) and featuring string arrangements by Ainslie Wills and percussion by Holly Thomas, Inside Voices isn’t just a journey of self-discovery but one of understanding one’s heart and soul.

Whether one has a foot in the future and another in the past as in the beautiful piano based, “Arrival” or facing a past version of themselves in the quiet and alluring “Ran Into Myself Today”. Tig invites listeners to explore and reflect on changes whether it be big or small, spiritual or physical, mind or body.

With a soft and quivering voice and cerebral lyrics, Tig examines the painful mistakes of the past, but instead of dwelling and sitting deep within those tender moments, she moves forward with “Too Late Heartbreak”. The closing track brings Inside Voices full circle. From changes to letting go to acknowledging the past to finding that never ending hope and optimism of not just life but love.

Tig adds,

“Although you might not guess it, I am a romantic at heart. I love dramas that end with a sunset, books that bring you closure, and albums that feel like a movie when you listen from start to finish. These songs were written in order alongside chapters that were unfolding in my life. It was a really formative time for me and I love that these moments will forever exist together on the EP.”

I love that it allows for a gentle confrontation of oneself. It’s the voice inside the heart and the voice inside the head narrating a life that is absolutely worth every up and down.

Repeating myself here, Inside Voices is stunning and beautiful, honest and wonderfully emotional.

If one is in Naarm (Melbourne, AUS), there will be an EP launch at The Evelyn Hotel in Fitzroy on February 23rd with Flynn Gurry and marigolden.
