EP REVIEW: Goodbye to the Valley Low (Side B) by Hazlett

Hazlett’s Goodbye to the Valley Low (Side B) is a continuation of the introspective storytelling he began in 2023 with Goodbye to the Valley Low. Recorded in the solitude of a Scandinavian cabin, the follow-up EP blends indie-folk’s raw sincerity with a richer and more layered sound that pushes his artistry into new territory.

“Truth be told, there was never meant to be a Side B to Goodbye to the Valley Low. I actually wanted to move onto something else, but the more that I tried moving on from it the more I kept getting pulled back. I realised just how many deeper questions my time in the cabin had raised, I thought I had unpacked it all but there was more digging to be done and somewhere deeper to go with it all. If Side A was the curiosity of the cabin, then Side B is working through all the questions that it left behind.”

What makes this project stand out is its evolution. Where Side A introduced delicate musings on distance and self-discovery, Side B delves deeper into these themes. Tracks like “Bones Shake” showcase Hazlett’s mastery of quiet intensity, with haunting guitars and an ethereal chorus that pulls one in. “The First Train Home” and “Do You Haunt Me” balance softness with a sense of yearning, while “Shiver” tackles life’s uncertainties head-on with sweeping arrangements and reflective lyrics.

The EP’s strength lies in Hazlett’s vocals that soar as they navigate themes of time, place, and change with an understated grace. They capture the essence of his journey in this chapter. Goodbye to the Valley Low (Side B) not only has a thoughtful edge, but weaves intimate reflections with lush and captivating production that allows Hazlett’s growth as an artist to shine.

With Goodbye to the Valley Low (Side B), Hazlett wraps up with a stirring second act with a divine exploration of time, place, and personal growth.
