EP REVIEW: Goodbye to the Valley Low by Hazlett

For those seeking the ideal soundtrack for a tranquil, sun-drenched day then it can be found in Goodbye to the Valley Low by Hazlett. Out on December 8th via Nettwerk, the six song EP is plush, polished, and flawless.

Following the earlier release of his debut album, Bloom Mountain, at the year’s onset, Hazlett‘s decision to conclude 2023 with Goodbye to the Valley Low feels poignant. It’s almost as if he’s shedding any preconceived notions about the pursuit of success as a singer-songwriter.

Retreating off the grid in Sweden, Hazlett and his longtime partner in crime, Freddy Alexander, aimed to return to a raw and stripped down sound and succeeded beautifully.

The stunning opening song, “Blame the Moon” is delicate and soft. A confessional of plans that were never fulfilled, it beautifully sets the pace for the EP with its catchy lyrics and easy vibe.

Throughout the EP, Hazlett navigates through vulnerability in “Mama’s Boy,” vocally flirts with a falsetto in “Missionary Feelings,” and gets introspective about impossible childhood dreams in “Cemetery”, and he does with confident ease. Hazlett demonstrates how one can be gentle and resilient while simultaneously having both strength and wisdom.

On the closing song, “Stolen Seasons,” Hazlett says,

“Everything happens for a reason. But in the heat of some moments, it’s hard to not just throw your hands up in the air and shake a fist at the sky.”

Goodbye to the Valley Low embodies an aura of serenity and authenticity and with Hazlett’s beautifully crafted melodies, and honest lyrics, he has artfully captured moments of contemplation and tranquillity. With Goodbye to the Valley Low he invites one to not only embrace their own quiet moments but to revel in them.
