EP REVIEW: Irretrospective: Part 2 by Async Await

Following September’s release of Irretrospective: Part 1, Async Await has released Irretrospective: Part 2. The EP follows in the footsteps of the first, continuing with a multi-textural sound that provokes and allays one’s thoughts.

With Irretrospective: Part 2, there’s the unique use of fuzzy and distorted electronics that I often associate with the work of Nine Inch Nails. “Common Ground” gives me that NIN vibe with elements that are reminiscent of the legendary band’s sound.

On the project, creator Mike Sorensen says,

“Irretrospective: Part 2 centers around the experience of friendship failing as situations change and we make the decisions that will define the rest of our lives. These songs move through stages of arrogance, criticism, judgment, reflection, and regret. Through this writing process I discovered that the criticism I had for other people was often a projection of my own insecurities and fears.”

While most of Irretrospective: Part 2 is rooted in darker and moodier electronics, “Tenuous” at its heart is a ballad-esque track that has a haunting bass line and an eerie metallic guitar riff that soaks into one’s brain.

Whether Async Await is exploring distortion or synth textures, they’re providing a sound that feels as if it’s a fusion of 90’s industrial and grunge. Irretrospective: Part 2 is a chemical reaction of sound and emotion where the raw intensity of grunge converges with the mechanical allure of industrial music.
