EP REVIEW: Reign by Orian

With twenty-four years under his belt, producer and engineer, Orian is no stranger around music. His latest EP, Reign, part three of The Mood Tapes series finds the artist exploring themes of betrayal, loss, and healing through haunting sounds, provocative beats, and heavy basslines.

Setting the emotional undercurrent for Reign, “Betrayal” captures the shock and disbelief following an act of duplicity while “The Coldest September” explores the terrain of loss through distorted instrumentals, conveying a sense of reaching the brink of existence.

With the intense pulses of a heart monitor, “Breathe” evokes a mix of heart-wrenching despair and soothing reassurance. The looming ventilator reminds one to breathe and find solace and resilience amidst adversity.

If “Betrayal” exposes hurt and “The Coldest September” explores loss, then the penultimate song “Discarded” serves as an acknowledgment of loneliness and the process of letting go. Its crescendo mirrors the raw emotions of pain and the gradual necessity to move forward.

Bringing closure to the EP, the final track, “Closure,” lives up to its name. The piano radiates a sense of healing and tranquillity that provides the listeners with healing and inner peace.

Reign offers a captivating sonic narrative through betrayal, loss, resilience, and healing with a musical journey that resonates deeply with the human experience.
