DEBUT ALBUM REVIEW: Fragments of Consciousness by Disconnected Souls

Emerging out of 2018 with a goal to blend classical, electronic, and metal into a cohesive and intriguing sonic experience Disconnected Souls released their debut EP Warring Elements and followed with a bevy of singles. With their debut concept album Fragments of Consciousness nearing release (January 19th), the band is not only further exploring their distinct sound but also putting the diverse range of the influences each member brings to the table on display.

With Fragments of Consciousness, the band dives into the escapades of gothic fantasy to Orwellian celebrations of the apocalypse and more. Picking up where the final track, “Mischievous Spirits” on their EP,  Warring Elements leaves off, Fragments of Consciousness is the journey of a Mischievous Spirit as they try to understand the human world.

Whether experiencing the impact of addiction, “Delirium”, through an eclectic blend of hip-hop beats and metal to ambient sirens beckoning you to an unbelievable  life, or perhaps an unbelievable death,  “Dissonant Whispers” and “Petrichor”, or to heavy and haunting, “Plague Rats”, “Silence of the Doves”, the album seamlessly moves through Mischievous Spirit’s journey with ease.

On the album, Fletch says,

“Fragments of Consciousness was originally intended to be a double release, however we elected to split this in two in order to keep the momentum going after the success of the Warring Elements EP. There is a conceptual story being told across these albums that pertains to the Mischievous Spirit, introduced on the aforementioned release. There is a huge amount of variety on this album and with this release we hope to define the genre of ‘Cinematic Metal’; each track is a story and is brought to life using the exact musical palette that is needed to convey the message needed. I don’t expect that this will be an easy listen and you might be positively baffled by what’s going on, but hopefully you’ll agree that we fulfilled our objectives of producing something different, and you’ll feel enriched for having had the experience (positive or negative)!”

Blending a plethora of influences, Disconnected Souls not only achieves in defining what cinematic metal is with Fragments of Consciousness, but provides an enchanting, unified, and riveting aural experience.

MUST LISTEN TRACKS: “Delirium”, “Petrichor”, “Kintsukuroi”, “Loveless”, “Fragments”, “Iyashikei”
