DEBUT ALBUM REVIEW: Peach by Peach

Peach, the highly anticipated eponymous debut album from Bristol’s desert-rock and post-punk quartet Peach, brings a captivating blend of influences, raw energy, and emotionally charged lyrics. The album will be out on September 30th and is destined to live up not only to the band’s previously released singles “Bad Touch,” “I’m Scared”, and “Already There” but their live performances as well.

Like a lot of artists, completing the album and band’s line up was disrupted by the pandemic. It wasn’t until post-pandemic that vocal powerhouse Ellie Godwin would join Andy Sutor (drums), Jean-Paul “JP” Jacyshyn (guitars), and Tim Cook (baritone bass) to round out the band. The foursome recorded at Middle Farm Studios with producer Peter Miles (Architects, Tesseract, Dodie, Petrol Girls) and stayed true to their influences and recorded live to tape, opting to snatch the raw energy that is their sound.

The decision pays off. The music is authentic and powerful, capturing the gritty and ballsy essence of their live performances.

On the their track, “Already There,” the band says this about the song,

‘Already There’ is about a growing awareness of being manipulated – that guttural feeling of unease, exhausted and perplexed thoughts, repeatedly striving to be a better version of oneself. As you move through the circular notion of this song, its growling and sludgy behaviours are profound. ‘Already There’ eventually leads to the intertwining of the spiralling vocals and the jagged guitar solo, projecting the emotion of the track to a pinnacle point of defeat.

What I like about the entire album is the grittiness and heaviness of each track. Sans “Long Mover” and “Settle Down”, the tracks are an immediate kick to the teeth, while the previous two mentioned start out slow they then sucker punche one in the gut.

Throughout the nine tracks on Peach, the band showcases their musical skills, with glorious heavy guitar and bass riffs, thunderous drums, fuck you and fuck off vocals. Diving into the explorations of relationships, the lyrics are brutally honest and raw.

Peach the album and Peach the band bring something fresh and authentic to the table and with their powerful performances and emotional depth both band and album are a must-listen for anyone craving a post-punk rock kick to the face.

Peach is a stellar debut album that announces Peach as a force to be reckoned with.
