HOT TRACK: “The Purge” by In This Moment

Despite having seen In This Moment multiple times at festivals and appreciating their sound and visuals, they weren’t a band I instantly connected with.

That changed with the release of their 2020 album, Mother, and I honestly have the pandemic to thank for that. The madness of the pandemic’s start and being in lockdowns reignited my craving for music that was new, fresh, and exciting. I found solace in old music, new music, in artists I had not given a proper chance before. In the Moment was one of those bands and because of COVID, I finally jumped on the bandwagon and have been a fan since.

So, to say I was thrilled with the announcement of their latest single, “The Purge”, was an understatement because with that announcement came the news that they would be releasing a new album, Godmode (October 27), as well.

Maria Brink, vocals, says this of the song and video,

I am so grateful for how everything flowed to bring this song to life, both sonically and visually. Kane Churko and Jensen Noen helped to create this musical & cinematic experience with us and we could not have done it without them. The underlying message of the song is to not fall too deeply into the rabbit hole, everything is about finding balance. I had a lot of emotions building within me when I approached the song for the first time and after years of holding it all in I finally got to let it out!

The video for “The Purge” is visually stunning. Maria glows as a powerful witchy goddess while the band brings a sense of demonic fear in their Mad Max inspired looks but while In This Moment look fierce and fabulous, the song is the true star of the video.

The power of Maria’s vocals shine throughout “The Purge” and it only solidifies why she is considered to be a powerhouse vocalist in the world of rock. The scream she starts at the 2:59 mark and finishes at the 3:25 mark is clean, precise, and epic. The bass and drums for “The Purge” has a delicious and menacing undertone that echoes throughout the song like a demon hunting its next possession and the guitars bring the vocals and rhythm together to create a song that is the epitome of an In This Moment experience: haunting and mesmerising.
